REVIEWS:

"My first instructional material was, ‘The Wet Plate Process, A Working Guide’ by Scully & Osterman.

Although I never had the opportunity to attend a hands-on workshop as a beginner, working with the process on my own over the years has allowed me to compile quite a list of questions regarding both technical and technique issues within my own workflow.

And while there are many online and social media options out there to post questions to these days, the responses given are filled with information which can be both accurate, and inaccurate.  Rather than having to sift through all that noise, my preference is to be able to consult with a professional.

Mark and France Osterman made it so easy for me to have plenty of face-to-face time online to address my specific questions, all while I’m in my darkroom and in front of my own equipment in Texas.  It’s such a good feeling to receive information and guidance which is safe, accurate, and focused on my own personal workflow and process interests.

This type of personal consultation is easy and affordable, especially if one compares it to how hard and expensive a little inaccurate social media advice can be."

“My wife Maureen and I fell into wet plate photography during the pandemic. We had no formal background in any type of photography whatsoever, but thankfully we found Mark and France Scully Osterman.

Located in upstate NY, they are true masters of all types of early photographic processes. We have done several workshops with them, both virtually and in-person at their Rochester studio. Mark and France have a deep knowledge and understanding of the wet plate process. Moreover, they can transfer their knowledge in a way that is easy to follow and understand.

Maureen and I are always learning as we continue our journey as wet plate photographers. Mark and France live a seven hour drive from our home in Boston, but thanks to their online virtual workshops and tutorials, it’s easy for us to do follow-up classes. We’ve learned how to make Gem Tintypes and create vignettes with them online. But where it’s been most helpful for us is with our troubleshooting. Having the ability to jump online with Mark & France to help resolve a silver issue, or a development problem, is priceless.

We’re so thankful for the assistance and their support, and cannot recommend Scully & Osterman more.
